One of my favourite shots from the shoot was printed quite large on the contents page - so I am smiley - the more the better!
Photography and fashion blog by Philip Stanley Dickson
This shot caused a big reaction on facebook when I previewed it recently, with more ‘likes’ than any other photo I have posted.
It’s a shot of the beautiful and powerful dancer Jo Richards. I used dramatic lighting to isolate certain parts of the shot and render the rest black. Jo’s great pose has added the rest of the drama required to pull off the shot.

There have been constant rumblings about this issue in the past, and even law changes in Israel (see further down this blog), but this stance by a clutch of Vogue editors is a true line in the sand. No more unhealthy eating practises (where visible) will be tolerated and no thin models. They are even shining a torch on the designers and want them to stop creating super-small sample size garments.
Check out these interviews and some of the photos from Carmen D’ell Orefice, Pat Cleveland and Estelle Lefebure.
Patrick Demarchelier is a huge inspiration to me and I only came across his name in a fashion book three years ago! Shame on me!
He has shot so many huge campaigns, but it is the variety and creativity of his portfolio which fascinated me. It really opened my eyes to what fashion photography could offer me in terms of pushing my boundaries and creating challenging as well as beautiful images. I remember a shoot he did in New York city centre, with a model against a rough blue plastic sheet and it blew my mind in how audacious it was. I really had to think how could such a shoot work and what attracted me to it and those types of questions have helped me try to be as creative in my approach to shoots as possible.
That’s when I realised that fashion photography was something I was wanting in my life!
Here’s my story so far:
OOOH! I am excited by my nomination for Scottish Fashion Photographer of the Year.
It’s going to be a huge show in Glasgow on June 11th, and I will be sharing lots more info on the awards in the run up, including who the judges are, who has been nominated and any other goss I manage to get my hands on!
I love this Vogue shoot in the states with photographer Matt Hind and model Heidi Harrington-Johnson
BIG NEWS for PHILIP STANLEY DICKSON aka PSD Photography!
Nominees for Scottish Fashion Photographer of the Year 2012 announced
I am over the moon that I have been shortlisted for this award and am looking forward to attending the event on 11th June in Glasgow.
It’s never good news when a big, and very old (160 yrs) brand hits hard times, especially as over recent years their advertising campaigns have held some fantastic images, which I have been drawn to when flicking through Vogue.
Here’s hoping that there is light at the end of the tunnel for the brand and the employees.
Just a small insight into some of fashion’s most iconic images.
I read in Stylist mag that Israel is passing a law that promises to tackle eating disorders amongst models. Magazines and Newspapers have been banned from using underweight models and will have to alert readers when they have used image manipulation to make male or female models appear thinner.
Models will also need to provide a medical report at the start of each shoot stating that they are not classed as malnourished by World Health Organisation standards.

You wouldn’t expect Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel to do anything by half, but the scale of this show is just huge and I love the theme and set design too.
I take it models smiling isn’t ‘in’ this year then!
